|Personality:|| Average Energy, Average Temperament |
|Health:|| Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Arthritis, Aggressive | Shadow is a 7+ year old Weimie who needs a new loving home, due to my husband developing a severe allergic reaction to him, such that Shadow can no longer live in the house. Shadow is a goofy lovable guy who seeks to please. He is very affectionate and loves to snuggle and lean on you. When he wages his docked tail, it's funny to watch because he wags his entire butt! He loves going for walks and wading in creeks, rivers, and lakes. He loves to run too, and makes a great running partner for athletic people. He knows basic commands like fetch, sit, heel, and lay down. He knows 'stay' too, but whether he chooses to obey is another ... (Read More)matter. He is around 106 pounds. This is larger than the breed standard, but normal for him, as his breeder breeds Weimies to be larger than the standard. Shadow used to be overweight, so he still has some 'fat flaps' when he sits. He is otherwise a well-built dog. Shadow has fantastic health insurance coverage! His current policy with VPI will transfer to his new owner. You can take him to any vet. His monthly premiums are currently only about $32/month, with annual $50 deductible (per incident) and 90% reimbursement, with an annual cap of $14,000. It covers almost every illness and injury imaginable, including cancer. Since he was diagnosed with a mild case of arthritis in January, his policy will continue covering it. I do not carry a routine care rider, since the cost of the rider exceeds the cost of routine care. Shadow has done great with children as young as 4 years old. However, he has never been around babies or toddlers, and I recommend a family with children at least 6 years old. He is very strong and could accidentally knock down smaller children. Also, no other pets in the house, due to his strong prey instinct. He has never bitten anyone. Shadow has been aggressive with dogs in the past, due to some stupid people thinking it would be funny to challenge him with their pit bull and German Shepherd, even after being warned not to. Since then, if another dog approaches him, he will fight. Since Shadow's 'brother from another mother' died from cancer in January, he has attended doggie daycare during the work week. Since starting doggie day care, his aggressiveness has decreased, due to being around other dogs. However, he still is not allowed direct contact with other dogs. I keep him on a very tight leash while walking him, if there are other dogs outside. His physical contact at doggie daycare is with humans only. His daycare providers could provide Shadow a reference on how good he is, if you would like a reference. If his new owner works, I recommend a doggie daycare, or a pet-sitter, to keep him occupied. He will be destructive if left home inside alone for more than a couple of hours. You could crate him, but he will probably howl and cry. He could be left outside during the day, but he would probably become bored. A fenced-in yard is great for him--wooden privacy fence, chain link, or wooden rail with mesh wire have all worked. Shadow is microchipped and up to date on all necessary vaccinations. His rabies vaccine is good through 7 December 2016, and his distemper/parvo vaccine is good through 4 March 2017! If you board or doggie day-care him, his bordatella is good through 22 November 2015. The rabies and distemper/parvo vaccines are only required once every 3 years. He does not receive other vaccines because they are not necessary, nor are they shown to be effective. Over-vaccinating can lead to other health problems. He receives monthly heartworm prevention with Iverhart Max and monthly flea & tick preventative with Hartz Ultraguard topical. The people lucky enough to adopt Shadow, and love him as much as I do, will receive ALL of his accessories, including a large igloo-shaped doghouse, large crate (good for airplane traveling), his food (science diet light for large breed adults), dishes, treats, sweater, toys, heartworm, flea& tick preventative, leash, and travel harness with seatbelt loop. All I ask is that you give him the human love, affection, and interaction he deserves and needs, maintain his health insurance, and keep me posted on how he is doing. We have had Shadow II since he was 3 months old. It breaks my heart to give him up for adoption, but in his current situation, I cannot give him the love, attention, and affection he needs and deserves, as he has to stay outside when he's home.
